About

What the Biobank is

The ACTC Biobank is a national resource for Alzheimer’s disease research, providing specimen storage, processing, and analysis for clinical trials and longitudinal studies.

Services

From collection to analysis

Specimen Storage

Long-term storage for biospecimens from clinical trials and cohort studies, in monitored −80 °C freezers and liquid nitrogen.

Sample Processing

Receiving, processing and aliquoting of plasma, CSF and other biospecimens, to each study’s collection protocol.

Biomarker Analysis

Single-analyte and multiplex assays on plasma and CSF, run by the biomarker laboratory alongside the repository.

Biomarker discovery for early Alzheimer’s detection

The Biomarker Laboratory works on biomarker discovery in Alzheimer’s disease, with a focus on blood- and CSF-based markers for preclinical detection. Work from the lab has shown that tau and amyloid beta carried in neuronal exosomes can predict conversion from mild cognitive impairment to Alzheimer’s disease — evidence that supports earlier diagnosis and better-targeted trials.
